By default, MathJax recognizes back ticks as math delimiters:

Might it be a good idea for the HTML writers to changes this configuration?

Could you please elaborate a bit or give a minimal example?

Do you want to *use* asciimath or *prevent* accidential interpretation of
text containing ` as asciimath?
